April 2017, West Chester, PA. April is a special month at Theraplay, Inc. Not only is it Occupational Therapy Month, when the work that OTs do every day is celebrated, but it is also Autism Awareness Month.
Autism Awareness Month’s purpose is to raise awareness for those with Autism around the world. In fact, April 2nd has been designated World Autism Awareness Day by the United Nations where member states are encouraged to do just that. People wear blue, and charities, companies and organizations hold events to raise money and to support Autism awareness.
Theraplay is no different. With the high number of patients with Autism seen, the staff wanted to do something special. Physical therapist Erica Jardine, who works in Theraplay’s Horsham Center, decided to form a team for the Autism Cares Foundation’s fun run and 5K. In addition to the race, Theraplay centers sold specially designed t-shirts to staff and patients to wear throughout the month, raising over $500 for Autism Cares.
Says Erica: “I am running with Team Theraplay to support the Autism Cares Foundation because of the wonderful opportunities they provide families to connect with each other. This foundation offers year round events and activities geared toward families who have a child with Autism. This not only provides the child with great opportunities to interact with peers, but also allows the families to meet and support each other. I think it is so important for all children to have the opportunity to play, and the Autism Cares Foundation agrees!”
